A front runner in the luxury hotel business , the Hotel Meurice in Calais (the first hotel to have this name) has been in existence since 1771. Originally the Royal Post House (LE CHARIOT ROYAL), the owner, Charles-Augustin Meurice, had the brilliant idea of adding an Inn to provide luxury accomodation for English travellers.

In 1818 his son, Louis-Augustin Meurice, founded the Hotel Meurice on rue de Rivoli in Paris and today this is one of the most famous palace in Paris.

The original hotel Meurice in Calais was destroyed in the last war and was rebuilt in 1954-55. Its imposing building, generous proportions, elegant staircase with wrought iron and brass banister and its large and stylish lounge all combine to give it the air of a castle or a  "mini-palace" as some say.
